Although they would, no doubt, have been pm)licly shocked, somo bygone divines (says a correspondent) might I have sympathies in secret with tho suggestion imida by members of the congregation of St.. James's, Bermondsey, that smoking be allowed in church. Hooker, Jeremy Taylor. South, Paley, and Robert Hall were heavy smokers. Isaac Barrow called tobacco his panpharmacon, <k cure-all. Bishop Burnet was so loth to part with his pipe that ho cut a holo in his hat to 6upporfc it.- I>r. Parr used regularly to smoke in tluj vestry before his sermon., while the congregation were singing. "My people like long hymns," ho said, "but I prefer long clays."
