New Zealand, met yesterday afternoon, tho Mayor (l>r. H. T. J. Thacker, M.P.) presiding over a largo attendance. , | Tho Officers' Ball Committee recommended that tho ball be held in the Colosseum, on cither tho first or second night of tho Admiral's arrival; and that tho prico of tickets bo one guinea and a hail for gentlemen, uud one guinea lor lathes. SutMxuuniittees luul boon set up to attend to decorations, floor, annexes, light, and heating, sujvper and music. it was estimated tnat the price charged lor tiekots wuuld cover the cost, of the ball, ouiy s=o far j as civilians wcro concerned; it would be necessary to apply to the Finance Committoo tor an amount to cover other expenditure. . I _>lr J. J. l>ougall, in moving tho adoption of tho report, said that arrangements were fairly complete, 110 pointed out that tho expense of certain work to bo done at tho Colosseum should be bo mo partly by the general fund, as tho building would be required for other entertainments. Cr. J. \V. Beanland (l>eputy-Mavor) stated that with Mrs Thacker and Mi;-s Tabart ho had visited tho building, with the view of ascertaining what provision would bo necessary to lit it for tho purposes of the function. By utilising the vacant section (facing the Tepid Baths) two tails, 150 x 37, could be erected for supper-room and other accommodation; smoking rooms could bo provided 011 tho Gloucester street front by the; erection of Smaller tents. As to tho i floor, it presented some difficulties. Ho! suggested that 'i week before the func- j tion, tho floor should bo thoroughly cleaned; to put down a now floor would involve an expense of about £3£o, wliicTij was out of'the question. The big tcnta' would cost between £17 and £18, and the small ones £6 or £7; the cleaning of the floor would cost about £30; he thought that with other expenditure,i the total required would be £85; that would be apart from the cost of decorations, or of tables. Tho report was adopted. Cr. J. A. Flesher submitted tho report of tho Finance C/ommitteo. which stated that it was estimated that not less than £1000 would be required to cover tho expenses of tho visit. Tho Lyttelton Harbour Board had voted £100, tho City Council had agreed to Eubsidiso votes from local bodies in North Canterbury up to £23!), and tho Lyttelton Borough Council had voted £25, and tho New Brighton Borough Council £5 ss. A circular-letter was being prepared for posting to private citizens, who might wish to contribute. In tho event of any surplus, it was thought that a memento of tho visit could bo purchased for tho ship. A "Jellicoe Week" was boing arranged for, also a sale of commemoration badges: this scheme was not so much for the purpose of raising money as to give an opportunity to everyone "to purchase a badgo to commcmorato the visit. Mr Flesher added that the Mayor had reserved Grand National Week for "Jellicoe Week." Replying to a quostion, the Mayor said that a list for private contributions to tho fund had been opened. As to the probable date of tho arrival of H.M.S. New Zealand at Lvttolton, the Mayor stated that it would bo the last week in August, or tho first week ,in Soptember. Apparently it was boing arranged that the warship should bo in Wellington for tho opening of Parliament, on or about August 24th. The report of the Finance Committee was adopted. Tho Mayor stated that both ho ■ and tho secretary' (Mr C, J. Treleaven) were in communication with the Goneral Manager of tho Railways on tho subject of special trains for country children. Tho Metropolitan Trotting Club had given their grounds at Aldington free of cost for the BDorts meeting for tho petty officers and men, in connexion with which a programmo of events had been drawn up. Tho following tentative list of fixtures was submitted: — Officers: Officers' Ball (Ball Committee) ; Officers' Ball Club): Officers' Conversazione (President of the Navy League); Officers' Luncheon (Canterbury Branch of the Royal Colonial Institute). The Mayoress will entertain Lady Jellicoo at the Provincial Council Chambers one afternoon", when the ladios of Christchurch will have an opportunity'of meeting # Lady Jellicoe; the Victoria League will also entertain Lady Jellicoe at an afternoon function. The fisturas for tho petty officers and men were: Swimming carnival, sports meeting, motor runs, trotting meeting, entertainment on four evenings in tho Colosseum (at which high tea and supper will be provided); it was also proposed that thoro 6hould bo a boxinc tournament, and afternoon football matches. _ After discussion (in committee) it was decided to admit the public in limited numbers to any of the evening entertainments in the Colosseum, at a minimum charge of 2s Gd per hoad, to include supper. The Entertainment Committee was given discretionary power as to tho number of the public to be admitted. On the recommendation of the Entertainment Committeo, Mr C. T. Aschman was appointed a delegate to go to Wellington: and tho executive appointed Mr J. J. Dougall as a second delegate. Tho Mayor explained that tho idea of sending delogates to Wellington was in order to see the nature of the functions there, and to get. in touch with tho officers and pottv officers with the view of ascertaining the class of entertainment acceptable to tho men. On tho recommendation of tho bports Committee, it was decided to make a charge to the public attending thr sports gathering. The iflayor said that it was intended to devote any surplus to charitable objects. Mr W. E.
