RACING AND TROTTIN( ; NOTES. (By "Looxer-On\") Private information is to hand froi Melbourne of the death of Mr Emanui I Lyons, at one time one of the bcsl ; known and most popular figures in th New Zealand racing world (says til "Otago Daily Times"). The late M Lj*ons was one of the leading bookmai ors of his day, and aiso a. prominen horse owner. He owned First Lord winner of the C. J.C. Middle Park Plate and was also of Somneil the only horso that ever serious!; threatened to upset Carbine's unbeatei career as a two-year-old. Mr Lyon was also interested in the ownership o other horses trained by the late Mr H Goodman, a notable one being Axe ono of tho best trotters of his day When the totalisator became establish ed Mr Lyons_ (who was in partnership with Mr "Mick'' Cohen) dropped on of the bookmaking business, but alwayi took a keon interest in racing. He de cided to settlo in Melbourne about 1( years ngOj and prior to his departure was the recipient of a presentation sub scribed to by all the leading sportinc men., and many others not connected with" sport-, and a social function ir connexion with it ranks as one of the greatest demonstrations of good fellowship that has ever been held in Dunedin. Tho late Mr _Lyons_ was a man oi very charitable disposition, and particularly well liked by all who knew Lira. His good deeds were many when he was a man of power, and his strong personality won him the friendship ol all who really knew him. "A real sportsman in the truest sense of the word" is only a just tribute to iiis memory. The Sydney "Sun" ]ia s the following: lake any saddle across to tho course; I might get a mount,'' said young MoNamiira. the apprentice jockey when the stablo lads from tL. Chippendall's establishment were leaving for Randwick. At the races Mark Thompson, trainer of Hem, was still in search of JL J oc key. Somebody had told him Chippendall's two apprentices were disengaged, so he approached that trainer. "Which is the lighter?" ho asked. "Oh, McNamara can rido at 6st 71b," was- the reply. "Can he jump a uorsQ out of the barrier smartlv? "You needn't worry about that. 'He will get away all right." So McNamara was engaged for the winner of the Etoncaster. On tho Monday he had no mount in the Sydney Cuj>, but other influences were again busy arranging matters for his benefit. The jockey booked for lan d'Or was 51b over, and F. J. Marsden, trainer of that horse, was in search of a 6st 101b boy." Suddenly he thought of McNamara, and quickly seeking out that youngster, engaged him, on the spot to ride the win- ?/ second l e g of tho double. Well, there's luck for you," said one ot tho old jockeys when he saw -Mis Namara win. "I ,-suppose trainers will have to beg him to ride their horses now if ho can win races like that'»

Hume is a light-weight, he does not seem to be able to ride under 7 6. Moreover, By Jingo won the same race last year, with 8 4 by eight lengths from Planar 8 13 &nd HaiD&iilt 9, uk! tlio last-named wao bandicapped at 93 in the Newbury race. Even if it were 8 2 he would be favourably treated. By Jingo won two small races at two years old, and ono at three. Avnsley would certainly carry much less weight than By Jingo. His only, win last season was in the. October Handicap at Newmarket, with 7 8, but it was a poor field. His weight in the Chester Cup wa3 75. Happy Man last season won Division 11. of the Ditch Mile Nursery Handicap. Golden Rupee, Gay Light, and Handsomo Boy being reserved for events later in the day. Hardshot was made an odds-on favourite, but he jumped wretchedly, losing lengths at every fence, was well beaten two hurdles from home. Kintailshore won cleverly, but he will be better suited when raced over country. Pure Gold did not look ready, but, like most of Gold Reef's stock, jumps cleverly, and looks likely to win a Hunters' Hurdle Race before long. Fairy Finn and Woo Alarm fell early in the Petre Hunt 'Steeplechase. With a milo to go Handsome Boy had taken charge, and owing to cutting corners eventually won easily by many lengths. Fairy Finn and Golden Rupee both looked on the big side. Th© latter fenced boldly, and looks likely to win a steeplechase when more eeaeoned. The Open Steeplechase was not a good betting race. Morecambe, who was sent out almost an even-money favourite, looked big, but the other two stripped well. Setting out to make the running, Morecambe on one or two occasions made faulty jumps, but he was etill going well at the post and rails ; three furlongs from home. Kaupokonui was also going well,. and had got within two lengths of the winner, and looked to have ' a royal chance; but he hit very hard and ! ilumphria toppled off him after a couple of strides, for which'he cannot be blamed, as ' the chestnut Runchcd the fence very hard. Kaupokonui having fallen, the race looked a gift for Morecambe, and ,he was first over ! tbe last fence, but h« stopped to a walk in J tho straight and was easily beaten. It ■ nu.
