« (press association telegrams.) AUCKLAND, June 10. Two inen, named A. Somerville and G. Tavernor, were fishing on the "West Const, near Waiuku. Tavernor fell into the water, and was washed out to sea. He was a returned soldier, aged thirty years. A carpenter named Henry Lord "was killed by a fall down the well of aliffc in a shop in Queen street. Alterations in the shop were being carried out, and tho lift was being altered. Just before tlio accident happened a plumber passed the place where JJord was working at the top of the lift, and he noticed that Lord was lying down with his head projecting over the lift well, engaged in driving a four inch nail in the ceiling. . He did not appear to be in any danger of falling down the well. Immediately afterwards he heard a crash, and found that Lord had fallen down to the bottom of the lift well from a height of about 30 feet. A verdict of accidental death was returned, the Coroner adding a rider that the statutory, provisions did not call for any safeguards during the construction ■of'such works, bub tho evidence disclosed a danger to workmen, and the necessity for some further provision. ' OPOTIKI, June 10. At the inquest on the death of John Clark, jeweller, the police evidence stated that Clark was under surveillance in connexion with the fire at Opotiki on June 3rd. The Coroner returned a verdict that deceased came to his end by blowing his head off with some high explosive, possibly a detonator, while in a state of mental depression. .
