iIONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of tli© Council of the Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon, Mr P. Davidson, president, in tho olrair. Mr Marriner reported on the visit to the Arthur's Pass tunnel, and the conference with tho Weet Coast delegates, and moved tlie resolutions adopted at the conference, which were carried. Messrs Turnbull and Jones and A. S. Paterson and Co. wrote on the delays in fhe cable eorvioo, and it was decided to invite other Chambers of Commerce to communicate with tho Association of Chambers in Wellington, : asking them td\ arrange for a strong deputa- j tion to wait upon tho Government with a i view to obtaining more speedy f/unmiinicar I tion by cable. ' J The Kaikonra Agricultural and Pastoral Association wrote asking support in urging the Government to prooeed with the construction of the South Island Main Trunk Railway. It was decided to reply that the Chamber, while in sympathy with the movement, WBs concentrating its energies upon the oompletion of the West Coast railway. The Minister of Railways wrote acknowledging the letter asking for better accommodation for a refreshment room at Springfield, which would have consideration. The Beefton Chamber wrote asking support in urging the Government to make a reduction in freight- on the Westland railways on coaL—Received. The Napier Chamber wrote asking support in endeavouring to obtain a compulsory Saturday half-holiday. It was thought advisable to leave tie matter aa at present, in the hands of tho local bodies conoerned. A sub-ciammittee was appointed with the object of conferring with a committee of the Industrial Association as to the advisability of urging the Cabinet to arrange for a separate portfolio to be held by a Minister of Industries and Commerce. The matter of publishing tiie date of closing of mails at tho final port of departure in the local pap&is was referred to a subcommittee to wait on the Chief Postmaster with a view to having this dono.
