COUNTY COUNCILS.

» • WAIMAIRI. The Waimairi County Council met yesterday. Present—Crs. S. A. Staples (chairman), J. P. W. Leo, W. D. Spencer, G. E. Cunie, C. E. Cross, J..A. J. TJren. J. Cleland, W. J. Walton, F. Sisson, and C. W. Hervey. The committee appointed to inspect the various works recommended that repairs be made on Marshland road and holes filled up, and that the bridge on Lake Terrace road be redecked. The recommendations were adopted. It was resolved that a plot of .land &t the junction of Lake Terrace and New Brighton roads, which the Council previously proposed to use for a tram siding and metal depot, should be handed over to the Burwood Patriotic Committee as a site for a soldiers' memorial,. provided the Patriotic Committee agreed to keep the gTonnd in good order. The engineer, following his report of work done during the month, stated that the Tramway Board was at one place raisin? tho line on the Papanui road unreasonably high, but the Board was willing to make up tho roadside if the rails were allowed to remain at the present height. Cr. Uren asked if the Board had obtained permission to alter the level' of tho line .wd road. The chairman ° explained that the work had been commenced through a misunderstanding while the engineer was absent. Cr. Siseon said that raising the roadside meant making a bigger drop to the channel, and this would be dangerous to vehicular traffic. It was resolved that tho Tramway Board be asked to lower the line and Toad to the former level, or else cover the side channel. Considerable discussion occurred on tho delay of the Tramway Board in supnlying metal and scoria, and it was left with the engineer to ascertain if the metal oould be supplied immediately. Failing this, the opinion was expressed that the Council should make other arrangements for obtaining metal and scoria. The electrical foreman reported that tho first shipment of 236 polc3 for Marshland had been erccted, and the wires had been run over most of them. Travis's road had been completed and the services all run. Some of the lines had been inspected and passed, and he would try to have the power on these lines within the next week. Another shipment of poles had been landed, and this would just about complete the Marshland area. New consumers in the Haxcwood district were being connected rnly on condition that they would sign in favour of electric light in the event of a poll being taken for that district. Two hundred ">ak and sycamore poles which were being cut and dressed for use on Maishland roads where light lines wero being run, would work out at a cost of about 6s each. It was resolved to oppose the City Council having a email strip of land between Wairarapa stream and Strowan road, Fendalton, included in the city area. Delegates to forthcoming conferences were appointed as follows:—Christchurch Town Planning, Cr. Hervey; New Zealand Counties Association Cr. Staples; Metropolitan Board of Works (convened by Drainage Board), Crs. Hervey and Sisson. [ About 40 "applications were received for the ' ! position of electrical engineer.
