OBITUARY.
MR THOMAS RUSSELL. Mr Thomas Russell, who diod at his lato residence, 85 Battersea street, Sydenham, on Sunday, at the age of eighty, was a very old and respected resident of Sydenham. Born in Scotland, he arrived in Now Zealand in 1863, and for many years carried oil the business of a builder and contractor with considerable success. At one period he was foreman of works for the Christchurch City Council. Thcf late Mr Russell was an enthusiastic bird fancier, and was one of the founders of the Christchurch Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Club. Incidentally, ho was an exhibitor at the first poultry show held in New Zealand, in 186 S. He was also an ardent supporter of the Presbyterian Church, and for many years was a prominent figure in St. Paul's. He is survived by a widow, two sons, Mr John Russell, a well-known local contractor, and Mr James Russell and two daughters, Mrs W. M. Allardyce and Mrs J. Shirlaw.
