Tito Union Steam Ship Company's stonmer Kowhai wont ashore five miles east of Farewell Spit at an early hour this moraine. , Midnight. The latest news roceived regarding tho Kowhai states that the vessel went ashoro nt 4 o'clock this morning in a fog, and is now in a fairly heavy swell, although she is not making much water. rho Union Company sent tho tug Terawlati to-night with salvage gear, and .she is expected to reach the scpn e of tho mishap about 11.30 a.m. tomorrow. They were short of food. The balance remained at tho scene of tho wreck, and were taken off < by a steamer. Tho Koonya struck heavy woather and the boats were smashed while bomg launched. A seaman managed to reach a rock 50 yards from the shore. / JP cana of a the other members of tho crew reached and remained on tho rock all night. Next morning, after soveral attempts and narrow escapes, a seaman got ashore with a line, and all landed safely.
