ITALY AND FIUME.
MR WILSON'S MANIFESTO
(By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) PARIS, May 9. There is a good deal of speculation as to what led President Wilson to act so suddenly in reference to Fiume. One versit>i is that he informed M. Clemencoatr and Mr Lloyd George on the Sunday of his manifesto, but agreed, after consultation, to withhold it, and that later his colleagues announced a deadlock, and he then published the document. Another version is that President Wilson learned of some overt act contemplated by the Italians in the nature of an annexation of Fiume, and he acted on this. His attitudp' over Fiume raises the question of how he can reconcile it with the agreement to yield the Saa-r Valley to France. American circles report that President Wilson will probably shortly state his reasons for this, which he is likely to defend on the ground that it was a necessary reparation to France because of enemy destruction of her coal mines. VIOLENT DENUNCIATION. -ROME, May 5. Gnbriele d'Anminzio addressed many thousands of people, and violently denounced President Wilson and tho Pcaco Conference. A resolution was carried, warning the Allies not to open Peace regotiations with Germany while Italy was absent, which would constiture a violation of the Treaty. D'Anniinzio was afterwards carrieid triumphantly to his hotel, amidst a procession of 10,000 people. WILSON ADAMANT. (Received May Hth. 5.5 p.m.) WASHINGTON, May 10. The State Department unofficially announces that' Mr Wilson has not deviated a hairsbreadth from his position regarding the Fiume dispute.
