OBITUARY.

THE REV. SAMUEL KNIGHT

I The Rev. Samuel Knight, whoso \ death occurred on Saturday night, was best known in this city as tho rather of the Rev. Percy Knight, of the Durham street Methodist Church. The late Mr Knight arrived in the Dominion only two years ago, but had a long, and distinguished career in Australia. Corn in Liverpool in 1834, he came out to Victoria at the age of 18 and .entered! into business. In 1856 ho was called! into the Methodist ministry, his first station being Portland. From this time he continued, without a break, to fill the chief puloits of Victoria and South Australia till his retirement from 1 active work in 1906. After this he did ten years of circuit building in Victoria, taking up neglected suburbs or small towns, and strengthening tho churches in these till thoy were able to call ministers of their own. During his long ministry he raised by his own efforts or gifts the large sum of £30,000 for Church purposes, and no needy cause was ever refused help. In 1877 he was elected president of the Smith. Australian Conference. On the death of,his wife .in 1917 he came to Chrisitchurch to reside with his son, the Rev. Percy Knight, and passed peacefully away in his sleep on Saturday evening. To-day. at 2 p.m., in the Durham streM-, Methodist Church t n short service will bo conducted by the T. A. Jou?h : n, chairman of the North Canterbury district, prior to interment in Linwood/ cemetery.

Mr H. J. Holder, builder and contractor, of Napier, died suddenly on Friday. Ho was a steward of the Nnpier Park Racing Club, and had had some little success as a horse-owner. He was twice married and leaves a widow and young family, also a grownup family by his first wife, including four sons, who spent a longthv period! at the front.

The death occurred at the Pnlmerston North Hospital on Friday of Mr Grorg? Henry Belfit, who for some time past had been custodian of the Opera House. Deceased, who was 31 years of age. had served with the Main Body at the Suez Canal and on Gallipoli.. He contracted) enteric and was invalided to England after nearly three years of servico. 'During the* epidemic ho was in charge of the inhalation chambor nit the Opera House, but he eventually fell a victim to influenza, from the effects of which he had not recovered.
