INFLUX OF HINDUS.
A CONSIDERABLE INCREASE.
In consequence of some remarks in the Auckland papers recently regarding an alleged influx of Hindus into this country the Minister of Internal Affairs has had prepared a statement showing the numbers of these people in the country.
At the censns in October, 1916, the Hindu population was 165, or, including half-castes, 181. Five of th e Hindus and 9 of the half-castes were fomale.i. Following are the returns of arrivals and departures since the taking of the census: In 1916 (two months), arrivals 27 males, departures 15 males; in 1917: arrivals DO males nnd 2 females, departures 12 males; 1918: arrivals 134 males and 4 females, departures 19 males; 1919 (three months): arrivals 80 males and _ 1 female, departure 1 male. The Hindu population of the Dominion, making no allowance for births. and deaths, was, on March 31st of this year, 406, or, including halfcastes, 472, a very considerable increase on the figures Bhown by the 1916 census.
