POLITICAL SITUATION.
MEETING OF LIBERAL PARTY. (SrECIAt TO "THK rBESS.") WELLINGTON, May 9. There is to he a meeting of the Liberal Party in "Wellington on 25th inst. It is believed that the purpose of the meeting is to discuss the political situation, which is just about as perplexing to the Liberal Party as it is to other people in the c6mmunity. Some little time ago statements suggesting a fusion of parties wore made by Sir James Allen and Mr Guthrio in tho North. Probablv these statements were not considered by their authors as likely to have any very important immediate effect, but it is a fact that they have caused some concern among some of the Liberals. This meeting to be held shortly may have some connexion witfi the tentative proposals made by the two Ministers.
