NEWS AND NOTES. WAIPARA. A farewell social was held in - r Baker's Hall, to bid farewell > *lr Julius and family, who are , district. Much regret was expressed at the departure of Sir Reeves, who suitably responded. Tho Kaiapoi men who returned »▼ the Kia Ora, wore mot at the Council Chambers yesterday by the Mayor, who welcomed them homo on behalf of the town. BELFAST. At the invitation of the Belfast Influenza Committee, Mrs Whitakcr, Nurses Cooper and Jonas, of tho St. John Ambulaneo Brigado, paid a visit to Belfast on Thursday evoning. Mrs Whitakcr explained tho symptoms in tho various stages of the disease, after which Nurse Cooper gave a demonstration of sponging a patient, taking the temperature, etc. Next Wednesday evoning it is proposed to give a demonstration of poulticing- Mr Poison occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance. A vote of thanks to tho party, proposed by tho Rev. T. M. Curnow. was carried by acclamation. of thanks wore also passed to Mr W. Nicliolls for conveying the party to and from Belfast, and to Mr W. Rogers for making the arrangements. KIRWEE.. A large number of residents of Kirwee and surrounding districts mot in the Agricultural Hall, for the purpose of according a "welcome home" to StaffSergeant Major W. L. Stewart, Sergeants R. G. Burgess and J. McGoverin, Lance-Corporal T. McGoverin, and Private L. Vickery. The Rev. P. Revoll, on behalf of the district, welcomed the men. A gold medal, suitably inscribed, was handed to each guest. Songs were given in Maori by Private He mi Hori Howell, of tho Maori Contingent, and he also danced n haka. The Rev. P. Revell and . J. W. Belgrave also contributed songs. Miss P. Belgrave and the Rev. P. Revell played the accompaniments. A pipe selection was given by Mr Howell. Dancing was kept up till after midnight, to music supplied by Mesdames F. Johnson, J. Christopherson, — Johnson, Miss Rita Christopherson, and Mr Howell. MARONAJT.

Threshing has been general in tho district for tho past fortnight, two mills operating almost sido by side, and, judging by reports to hand, the farmers should bo well satisfied with the returns, tho wheat yielding up to 70 bushels pov acre. There is still ft quantity ot peas and clover yet to thresh.. Thodrying winds lately have greatly helped in tho harvesting of these cereals, which liavo been stacked in good order and, like the wheat, promise good returns. Owing to tho difficulty in getting fat sheep away, tho farmers ar© mostly overstocked, but feed has been fairly plentiful, and stock does not appear to have suffered from, the _ dry weather. The cream supply is still well maintained, but can bo expected to fall away as the cold weather approaches. As a result of an interview 6ome of the residents lipid with the PostmasterGeneral, a daihr ,-inail service now replaces the previous tri-weebly service.

: PREBBLETON. | A friendly match' played between ttie Prebbieton Football Club and a team from the Riccarton-Sockburn Club, resulted in a win for Prebbieton by 14 points to 3. Tries were scored by McMurtie (3), and McNally. H. Prebble converted one. At ' a well-attended meeting of the club, Mr' G. L. Millar in the chair, Messrs F. Carpenter, J. Kingan and T. Robins were elected vice-presidents. The secretary, reported that a match had been arranged with, the Waihora Club for to-day. in order to augment the funds of the club, it was decided to hold a social on May 29th. The recently revived Brass Band is making very good progress, the • practices being, on the whole, well attended. The bandmaster, Mr S. Cooke, is hopeful that the Band will be far enough advanced to make its first .public appearance at the peace celebrations. Freak music has boon procured, and several of the instruments have been repaired, which has somewhat strained the finances of the Band, and renewed support in this direction would be welcomed. LITTLEEIVER. -• News has been received by Mrs. J. Londrigan that her 6on, Trooper L. N. Londrigan, has been admitted to tho General Hospital, Abassia, suffering from appondicitis. The latest report stated that he was progressing favourably. Mr L. B. Davonport, of Chri6tchurch, has taken up his residence in little River. Mr Davenport wag the builder of tho new Maori Hall at Little River, which is to be opened next month. GERALDTNE. j The harvest festival in connexion I with the local Methodist Church, was celebrated this week, with special services on Sunday, followed by a sale to raise funds for the extinction <i the debt on the church property. The sal» was very successful, and realised some £ 130 - Tho Mayor, after his installation, invited the councillors to slipper, whun a number of matters affecting the town were discussed. The erection of a icw Fire Brigade station was referred to, and the need for hydro-electrical energy for power and lighting was emphasised, while Ibe question of sanitation received attention. Mr J. M. H. Tripp has been asked to represent- the borough at the TownPlanning Conference. WAIMATE. The third meet of the Waimate Hunt was held at Mr C. F. d'Auvorgne s Makikihi. Mrs fTAnverpno provided aftertionn tea.- Mr Harrison, master, thanked the owners of the fnxms hunted over, also the host and hostess. St Paul's Methodist congregation farewelled Mr and Mrs Thomas Manchester on Thursday. The choir gave Mr Manchester a hymnbook and umbrella, and Miss Graeie Manchester a brooch. The congregation gave Mr and Mrs Manchester a solid leather suit case, and choice books to their three daughters. Sonps were given by Misses Thomas, Barford. Bannerman. Ruth Crawshnw, Mrs Forster (ChristcKurch). Mr J. "W. Manchester; and a recitation by Miss F. Manchester. *Mr C. E. Manchester was elected unopposed to'the vacant seat on the Hospital Committee. (
