SPORTING.

racing and trotting NOTES. : i»* "Looxir-6n."> Vascular hua tad to bo eased in his work owing to lamenee in front. He will not bo a. runner at the Dunedin Winter Meeting. The big gelding suffers badly from corns. F. Christmas has started work on brothers to Fiery Cross, Glendower, and Partisan. Of the three the brother to Fiery Cross looks likely to torn out the best horse. G. M. Aynslcy is breaking in Warstep's first foal, a filly by Solferino. Sh© is fairly well grown, but is not at all attractive. M. Hobbs is working a yearling colt by Kilbroney—Portland Lass, the dam of Bondage. He is a particularly well-grown youngster, and might develop into anything. He reaambka Kilboy at hia age. Glendower has been having a srpell in the paddock since ho returned from the Wellington Autumn Meeting. Taking a line from Vagabond's running at the Manawatu Meeting, it eeems a pity that the Glenapp gelding did not raco at Awapuni, as on recent form he showed himself capable of beating Vagabond three times in four contests. A local sportsman received a letter from London yesterday, in which the writer stated that he hod met Arthur Oliver, who had engaged to ride for the Hon. George Lambton, and did not know when he would return to New Zealand. W. Emerson arrived home yesterday in the Kia Ora. He ia ill tho Ccst of health. The schooling fences have been erected at Ricearton, and several horsea will be sent over them this morning. NEWMARKET FIRST SPRING MEETING. TWO THOUSAND GUINEAS. [The result of tho Two Thousand Guineas, the first of the season's classio events, ia always looked forward to with, considerable interest, as it is regarded as throwing some light on the Derby prospects, and with racing in England approaching its pre-war standard the classic races will regain their former importance. The Panther's victory would not be unexpected, for he was one of the beet of last seaeon's two-year-olds; indeed, in the Free Handicap'he waa placed at the head of the list. Writing in the "Sportsman" at the beginning of tho year, 'Vigilant" said:—"The Panther is unquestionably a very nice horse that may bo included in the category of 'good big'uns,' and if he goes on all right there must be tootr, for more than average improvement during the winter, while Manser may bo relied on to do t»»m justice. Tho colt inherits much of the character of his sire, Tracery, but I shall want to see him do more than he ha<s yet accomplished before admitting him to bo of the same high class; still, it is.something in his favour that ho had a light season 3Mi year, having run only thres times, twioo snc- | ccjsaful, and once when cleverly beaten on this debut by Paper Money. His last per- | form an ce was his best, when he beat I cleverly by three-parts of a length, with Gal- ! loper Light, from whom he was receiving ten ! pounds, beaten nearly three lengths." _ Of I Buchan, the same writer said:—"ln epito of ! being a first foal, ho has ptaity of size and | beautiful quality, the only thing against him I being that he had on© or two severe finishes, which may have taken some of the steel out of him.]

Trotting Club opened its winter liziure to-day in tlio presence of a good attendance. 'J.'no track was never in better oidor at this time of the year, and several iirst-clssa performances were registered, Albert- Ctiug, Our Gill, and Gleaming especially riicing well. The racing was most interesting, and some good finishes were witnessed. E. McDermott was tho most successful leinsman, winning with Our Girl and | Moneybox, while the latt-or also gained a sccojid. Three first favourites were successful during the day, and there were no large dividends, backers being fairly accurate in their selection. Tho general management was well up to the usual high standtfrd, and tho racing was freo from oil suspicion. Tho First Amateur Handicap produced a much better and a more interesting ■ race than is generally seen in this class of contest. Waiataipu began smartly, and taking tho lead was in front until a furlong from home, when tho favourite, who was trotting in fine style, put in his claim, and won nicely. The winner, Delville Wood, is a three-year-old gekling by Wild-wood Jupior from Sirrah J., and was successful at this club's meeting in March. He was at one time a member of A. Hendrickson's team, but failing to act ' with the straps on was educated as a straight-out "trotter. Waiatapu, who finished second, broke fifty yards from home, but (settled down again in time to beat Doodera.ll for second money. Rito showed a lot of speed, and entering tho straight threatened danger. Under pressure he broko, and finished fourth, with. Harmony fifth. Gold AlDort broke at tho start, and was never prominent. Ho is a useful 'sort, and one that will with racing. Our Girl began in great style in .the Innovation Handicap, leading Tatsy Dillon, Lochnagar, • and St. Mihiel. The winner is a member of J. MoDermott's stable, and a useful sort, and one likely to be heard of again. Irish. Eyes broko her hopplea Bt the start, and ww pulled up. Golden Peter was prominent for ten furlongs, when he retired beaten. St. Mihiel went a sound race, finishing fourth, clave up behind the placed division. Red Star showed epeed in p.atclies, but was too eore to produce his best. Vilo paced a fire race, being close up at tho finish, and is a promising youngster. Colo Bess wbs the only scratching from the Beach Handicap, and after a fine race, in which Anquilla, Moneybox, - Mooney, and Royal Step flattered their supporters, tho last-named gained the verdict by half a length from Moneybox, be .h horsea being hard ridden at the finish Mooney and Anqui'la made a bold bid for supremacy, but failed to respond ini the final stages, _Dandy Chimes, who was conceding the limit division: 15Cyds, was slow to bogin. Tho eon of Four Chimes finished well in fifth place, and should bo nil the better for tho race.

All started in the Victory Handicap* Trix Pointer being. installed favourite, with plenty of money for Stockade, Vice-Admiral, and Albert Clin?. At the end of two furlongs Vice-Admiral, Collo Sydney "Wilkes, Nancy. Stair, and Stockade were racing' in close company, with Trix Pointer and Albert Clin? handy. Vioo-Admiral. was prominent all tho. way, and three furlon(*s from home was showing the road .to Trix Pointer, Albert Cling, and Cello Sydney Wilkes. At this etage the last-named was done with, and Vice-Admiral leaving . the rails " Albert Cling threw' out a strong challenge, and won handsomely from Vioe-Admiral, Trix Pointer . all out in third place. Captain Stanley broke nt the start, while Shanghai. Stockade, and Pitaroa all lost their chances by going to a break. The winner, Albert Cling, is owned and trained' at Oamaru, and by winning qualified for the New Zealand Cup. The eon of Young McKinney got all the best of the running, and much of his success was due to his getting a good run on the rails in the last four furlongs. Moneybox made amends for his defeat earlier in the day by annexing the Domain Handicap, after an interesting finish with the favourite, Irish Eyee, and tho Southland-owned St. MihieL IrishEyes lost -ground at the start by failing to pace correctly. She nut in a fast middle mile, and actually headed the field, but Moneybox, under pressure, beat her in the run home. Golden Peter, after being prominent for a mile, retired beaten. Ouimet was slow to begin, but he was not unduly hurried, and should be all tho better for tho race.

A poor lot of unhoppled trotters faced the starter in the St. Clair Handicap. The race did not aroneo much interest, Winiata winning comfortably from Exraoor and Patard. Winiata is a recent addition to J. Mc-Lennan's stable, the mare having recently been leased by the Otago sportsman, Mr T. T. Ritchie, a steward of the club. Special Ribbon, Happy Jack, and Rita Rose trotted badly. Ben Bell and Koraki both showed speed in patches, only to go to a break when under pressure. Miss Lorna looked like finishing in a place, but stopped badly in the concluding stages. The Railway Handicap was the best betting race of the day, Intolerance carrying one hundred tickets more than Gleaming. Thero was solid support for Watchman. The last-named lost his position before ' going out of the straight, and Gleaming, in close company with Blue Chimes, showed the way to the others. At the business end Gleaming put in his claim, and won easily from Jack Arrah, who staved better than Evening Chimes and gained second money. Intolerance broke soon after the start, finishing in the ruck. Silver Shoe gained a good position in the early stages, but found the pace too solid, and had to be content with fourth place. Malice failed to strike a gait, and Jane Wilkes showed no speed. Barooga and Prince Burlington were slow to begin. Both were running on at the finish, the latter showing to best advantage Dixie Lee fell after passing the winning post, but neither V. Alborn, the driver, nor the mare was hurt. The race was an exceptionally fast run one, each of the placed horses improving considerably on the handicap time. The winner's time, 3m 28s, is a record for the track the previous record of 2in 33 3-ss, being held by Moorland, registered in May, 1916. „ Tossy M., Gladeye, Hectorata., and Stockade declined t.Roir engagements in the Flying Handicap, Matty's Boy carrying almost twice as much money as anything elso in tie race. After ' Game child had led tho field , for six furlongs, South

Star and Matty's Boy ranged alongside, and in a fine Snish down the straight Matty s Boy won nicely from Inwood, who cam® fast over the last furlong, and beat South Star, with Gamechild close up fourth. Red Prinoe was prominent for sis furlongs, waen he retired beaten. Cello Sydnoy Wilkes lacked dash,« his early effort having proved too much. Quadroon stood on the mark, and took no part in <he> race. ACCEPTANCES FOE SECOND DAT.
