Lowli3haw (president) occupied the chair. Before proceeding with the toast-hat, all present roee as a tribute to the memory or the ex-mcmbers of the club who would Dot return from the war. The president welcomed delegates from tne Centre and local clubs, and also the members of the club who had returned from the war. The club badly needed their service* in helping to carry on. The Canterbury Club held tho unique position oj being the oldest club ir Australasia. antl having the leaat number of active members. The reaaon for the latter state of affairs was that the club had sent nearly all l" activc members to the war, and he looucd to .a successful season next summer, when many of these men would be able to again pull for tho club. Rowing would roeive a big fillip by the institution of rowing among the school boys. Concluding his remarks in proposing the toast of the 'Canterbury Bowing Club," he referred fittingly, to J"® act of Captain Fairburn in arranging that the residue of the estate of his son, who had been a member of the club, and had been killed at the war, should h® devoted to purchasng trophies for the challenge com-

petitions in connexion with the club from year to year. The toast was replied to by 3£r W. H. Evans (captain of the club). Mr J. B. Evans, in proposing the toast of '"Returning Members," said that the club had sent 150 men in answer to the country's call. Thirty hsd returned, and he regretted to say that 30 would never come back. Last year the boatsheds bore a deserted sppearance on account of members being at the war, and the older members were loft to carry on. and keep the club going as best they could. With the support lent in various directions by returned men, he hoped for a good season next summer. Major B. C. Wickens and Oapt. E. W. Cuddon suitably replied to the toast. Several other toasts were suitably proposed and acknowledged. _ At an interval the prizes won during the past season were presented.
