MOTOR SPEEDS.

to TIII4 ElilfOli OB" "THE I'nKSS." Sir,—ls it not ciuito tirno something was done to prevent ttioso pßople "Who will drive in ami uiotoi -cycles at an excessive Bpeed ana consequent danger to both, themselves and ttiose who drive at a reasonable ( speed throughout the suburbs of this city ? I drive a car and get plenty of enjoyment at a speed of 15 to 17 miles per hour, and 20 to 2fi miles on country roads. I think, Sit, the lo to 17 miles limit should be adopted and mode a bylaw within a radius of four and tt half miles of the General Post Office. This ivould make Mew Brighton to the notttt and Sockburn crossing to the south ■within the speed limit. It is simply awful the way some motorists drivo once outside the city belts. On tho Ferry road it is nothing uncommon to see motor-cars and motorcycles tearing down the main road at anything from 25 to 45 miles per hour. I consider these excessive spaoda. Drivers have a kind of "temporary toad— licss,'* and do Mot really realise tho pace they are travelling. If they should iiave a bad "blow out" or other mishap there 'is almost certain to bo an accident —sometimes a capsize and perhaps a fatality. Our Automobile Association should movo in this matter and set a good example. The fast American car is now coming into fashion, and 15 to 20 miles (a safe pace) is laughed at. I am of the opinion that borough council and road board foremen should bo made pace regulators or inspectors, as they are mainly occupied on the loads and would bo in a position to check those "feather-brain" drivers who tear through their boroughs regardless of the risk they run to themselves and ethers travelling the roads. Par too many accidents occur throughout New Zealand, and the number is steadily increasing every year.—Yours, etc., IT'S THE PACE THAT KILLS.
