DUNEDIN TRAMWAYS DISPUTE.
AN ABORTIVE CONFERENCE. (PBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) DUNEDIN, January 7. Tho conference between represent!!* ■ tives of the Tramway Union and the ■ Itoslyn and Kaikorai tram c-jmpanies' to-day ended in a deadlock. The oompanieft' delegates announced that their . directors considered that the hill panies could not pay the wages agreed to by tho City Council, which they regarded as excessive, and more than the receipts would warrant. They stood by the first offer of slight increases in wages, but patrons of the trams were not numerous enough to give them any chance of recouping additional expense by increasing fares. The Union refused the companies' offer, and the conferenco ended. It is expected that the matter will bo taken to the Arbitration Court.
