COAL SHORTAGE.
HINTS OF RAILWAY SERVICE CURTAILMENT. (press association telegram.) WELLINGTON, January 7. ihe Railway Department has never been so short of coal as it is to-day. The hold-up of steamers at Newcastle* has cut off many thousands of tons of coal which the Department, honed to rewire during tho past two months. At the same time the New Zenland output has been far below normal by reason of tho stoppage of operations during the epidemic (nbmit three weeks) and the Christmas holidays (about a fortnight). It is expected that unless the eoal supply improves quickly, the Department will he obliged to make some cuts in the train services.
