The wool cheques and the approach of harvest are giving the majority of Canterbury farmers a pleasant feeling of anticipation in which, however, the wivea of many of them cannot join. The additional cash often goes into implements or stock, or something for the farm, whilst the wife plods along with the same old conveniences she had when 6he was married: if she lived in the city she wouldn't be bothered with them.
