Naval officers attached to the portion of the American fleet which has just arrived declared that England has built a new type of large submarine cariying a twelve-inch gun mounfed forward. It was used in Tb>ombarding Heligoland! on.several occasions. Tlio recoil of tho gun was so heavy that the submarino was forced six feet below tho water. The officers added that England had developed n submarine with a surface speed of 2a knots, steam driven, armed l with four-inch guns, manned by a crew of fifty, and equipped with long-rango wireless. When submerging the two chimney stacks are folded back and tho hatches automatically closed.
