".REVIEW" TO BE ISSUED. (SPECIAL TO "THE PRESS.") WELLINGTON. December 29. The Education Departmont will shortly commence the publication of a monthly "Gazette"' or "Review." It will bo the medium by which circulars And instructions will be conveyed to teachers by the Department from time to time Notes will . appear for the guidance of toachors. with a view to improving methods and schemes of work in the schools. These notes will deal also with such matters as the interpretation of tho syllabus prescribed, the organisation of schools, and the like. It is intended that there shall bo articles in the periodical by competent Authorities on subjects of interest to teachers and others concerned with tho education of the young. .Advice will be given to teachers as to books they should read in order to keen abreast of current educational thoiight. The "Review" is being brought out at the suggestion of tho Minister (the Hon. J. A. Hanan). It is intended that it shall Lo a Competitor with th 6 "Journal" of the'Teaohers' Institute, though it may on occasion denl with the same class of matter as is now dealt with in the "Journal."

The > Minister of Education has askorl the Director of Ednrntipn to submit to him proposals for tho revision of the Erimary school syllabrm, with a view to nprovincr the instruction riven in certain subjects, notably English. It is tho opinion of tho Minister, as it has for some time been the opinion of other observers of the work of nrimary school ptipils. that the changes in th<* methods of teaching English which were introduced some twenty years ago. hnve rot been alteeothcv a success. 7* i"- probable that the changes made involve a return 'to the old or methods, in which the pttni] was required to devote n considerable amount of timo and study to formal grammar.
