The curious position of a food controller being fined for a food offence occurred at Dorchester, England, when Charles Henry. Smith, provision mertown and member of the Food Control Committee, was convicted of selling 21b of ground rice at 5d per lb, the control price being 41 d. The Bench, of which Mr Thomas Hardy, the celebrated novelist, was a member,, imposed a fine of £15 and costs,,.bringing the total to £18.3 a.
