THE TRAMWAY TROUBLE.

« CONFERENCE TO-MORROW

The trouble between the Christchurch -tramwnymen and tho Tramway Board .appears to bo approaching" a crisis, and - something definite should happen within the nest two or three days. Tho reinstatement of the six dismissed motormen is tho burning question just at present, and in this connexion i}lr W. J. Walter, a member of the (Board, has given notice t-o move: "That ' 'the six motormen who were recently .dismissed bo immediately reinstated to •thoir former positions." A requisition calling for a special meeting of tho Board to discuss tho motion has been .signed by the neces:garv number of members, and the meeting" will be held on Saturday morning. To-morrow morning tho .-nib-commit-tee set up by the tramwaymen will mtifct the delegates of the Union in conference on tho realtor in question, and their report will Ik> maae to tho Board at Saturday's meeting/' Should the Board's reply to the Union not bo favourable, tho TTnion will meet on Saturday night to clocido on what steps it shall take. TIME ALLOWANCES. Speaking on Tuesday concerning the working conditions of the men, Mr Hunter, secrotary of the Union, marie special reference to tho matter of time allowances. Some people, he said, woro under the impression tliat the Board . gave the men a 10 minutes' allowance before starting work, and 10 minutes after having their cars. The award, however, provided that motormen m«?t , be allowed 10 minutes for taking their 'cars out. and a similar time for bring?ing them in, and conductors had a * similar time for taking the cars out, and for bringing thorn in and paying in. Thus, instead of getting something , for nothing, they were doing the Board's work all the time, and if they carried out all the duties laid down in tho regulations, they took considerably , longer than the 10 minutes. As a matter of fact, Mr Hunter added, when tho award was under consideration the men unsuccessfully endeavoured to obtain greater time allowances.
