MAGISTERIAL. (Before Mr S. E. McCarthy, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. A first offender was fined ss, ill default 24 hours' imprisonment, and two statutory first offenders were each fined lGs, or IS hours' imprisonment. For u third offence, "William Harrison was fined £3, in default seven days' imprisonment. BROKEN ORDERS. Effie O'Tcole (Mr Johnston) was ordered to come up for sentence when called upon on two charges of breaking her prohibition older. Arthur Ryder was fiued £2 and costs, in default seven days' imprisonment, for a similar offence. Frederick Seelen appeared on resiand charged with drunkenness, and a 'oreacii of his prohibition order. Ho was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when calltd on. REMANDED. Alfred Ernest Smith (Mr Casaidy) was remanded until Friday on a charge of escaping from legal custody. Sentence was deferred till Friday on a churgo of stealing £29, to which he had previously pleaded guilty. THEFT. - Arthur Crook, charged with the theft of a cheque for 15 Is, the pioperty of Thomas O'Shanncssy, was sentenced to tlirec months' imprisonment. HOTEL CASES _ Charles A. Lange (Mr Cassidy), licensee of the Maaonio Hotel, and Thomas Beasley (Mr Alpers), barman at the eaaw hotel, wero charged with ceiling liquor during prohibited hours, and expeeing liquor for sale during prohibited hours. "William Fnuer ai.'l AVilliam Henry bimpson were charged with having been on the premises during prohibited hours, and with having given wrong mimes end addresses to the police. It was stated that the barman had eerved the two qien under the impression that tlicy were boarders (ft the hotel. The licensee had known nothing of the offence. The barman and licensee were each fined £2 and coats, and the other two men each £1 and costs. Percy Nay lor (Mr Casaidy), Jnmes Anderson, John Thomas Doharty, and Rcmcld Montgomery wore each fined £1 and costs for having botn o:i licensed premises during prohibited hours, and with having given wrong information to the police. Samuel Foisyth was .similarly punished ior having been on ! licensed promises before 9 a.m. Arthur RO3O and Walter "Williams (Mr Coseidv), licensee and barman respectively of the Cafe do* Paris Hotel, on charges of selling liquor during prohibited hour;, were cach convictcd, and the licensee was fined £2 and costs. • BY-LAW BREACH. Frederick F. Caere was fined £1 and co»ti for failing to notify the Inspector of the erection of scaffolding." MAINTENANCE. Arthur John Smith was ordered to provido maintenance for his wife, Elizabeth M. Smith, at the rate cf 20s per week. Frederick Walter Forsyth, charged with disobeying a maintenance order, wae sentenced to 14 daya' imprisonment, in default of payment. James Henry Smith (Mr Ca-saidy), who was £16 in arrears on an order for the maintenance of liis wife, for whom Mr Cuningham appeared, was ordered to pay off the arrears at the rate of 10s per week, in default two. months' imprisonment, and as a child had been born einco the original order was made, the amount of the order was increased from 20s to 80s per week.
