Bernardino Macbado, lias been assassinated. The Republic of was proclaimed, after a short revolution, on Octobcr sth, 1910. The President is elected by both Chambers, with a mandate for four vears, but he cannot be re-elected. The President, who must be at least 35 years of age, appoints Ministers, but these are responsible to Parliament. The President may not be present in the Chambers at debates. Ho receives a yearly salary of £-(500, with £1300 for allowances, or a total of £3900 yearly. The first President of Portugal was Dr. Manoel do Arriaga (August 24th, 1911, to May 27th, 1915); the second, who was elected for the remainder of the term of the first was Senhor Thcophile Braga (May 29th to October sth, 1915). Senhor Braga was tiv provisional Pn s dent of the Republic (October oth, 1910, to August 24tli, 1911). The President who has just bean assassinated, Dr. Bernardino Machado, was elected on August Gth, 1915 and assumed office on Octobcr sth, 191t>.
