OBITUARY.

MR C. J. PATRICK

Mr Charles Jolin Patrick, who passed awav on the 7th inst., at his residence, AVoodham road, Christchurch, was wellknown in old volunteer and defence circles. He was a native of Herefordshire, England j and his father was at one time a director of the Bluecfpat School, London. Tho late Mr Patrick came out to Victoria with his parents when a boy. After spending some years in Victoria ho came over to New Zealand at the time of tho rush to the Otago goldfields, and went through tho stirring days of the Dunstan, Gabriel's Gully, and other famous Otago gold rushes. After spending some years in Otago he went to the West Coast at the breaking out of tho gold rush there, and was ono of the first to land at Hokitika. Mr Patrick was store-keep-ing at Waimea for some years, where lie was chairman of the first public body formed in Westland, the Arahnra Road Board; the late Hon. R. ,7. Seddon was a member of the same body. On giving up 6torekeeping Mr Patrick took up the profession of school teaching, having received a college education, and was in the service of the Westland and Grey Education Boards for many j-ears, and later of tho Taranaki Education Board. While in Taranaki he was appointed to a position in the Defence Department, Christchurch, which he occupied for about twelve years, retiring on superannuation seven years ago. He leaves a widow and four sons and three daughters, one of the sons being at present at the front. MR J. PEOPLES, SENR. Another of Kaikoura's old identities passed away yesterday in the person of Mr John Peoples, senior, aged 82 years. He had resided in Ksrikoura for about fifty years, coming to the district from the West Coast, where he had followed mining pursuits. He took up land, and was successful as a farmer. The deceased, who was one of the fine old typo of pioneers, leaves a widow, five sons, arid four daughters, to mourn their loss. Two of the sons are expected from the front shortly.
