CHESS.
• CANTERBURY CLUB. The fifty-eecond annual meeting of the Canterbury Chees Club was held ?n .-he club room in tho Y.M.C.A. Building last evening. Mr H Kennedy occupied tne chair, ana there was a fair attendance of members. The annual Teporfc stated that 'the membership roll now ehowed seven war members, six honorary life members, and thirty active members. Though a chess club was, generally speaking, a resort of men rather above military age* the club h.ad, in common with others, contributed its quota to the honour of tbo Empire. Two members, Messrs G. Jj. Barclay and G. Baxter, had made the supreme sacrifice. Messrs Darwin and Twyford had returned, and the return shortly of Mr Severno, an old captain and. champion, was looked forward to. The standard of club play had been well maintained. Tho i club in telegraphio matches had been successful in lowering the colours of "the 1918 "Wellington team, but had been beaten by a Dunedin team. A very successful patriotic chess tournament, in aid of tho fund to purchase chess sets for "transports and hospital elrip. had been hold during the year. _ Tho financial statement ehowed a credit balance of £8 Bs, and club assets £68 14a, with no liablities. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr F. Woodford; vice-presidents, Messrs R. A. Joseph and G. H. Severn©: secretary. Mr W. H. Joyce; treasurer, Mr H. Kennedy; committee, Messrs R. Lovcll-Smith, G. L. Wilson, H. Ij. Anderson, J. Barron, and T. Hawkins; librarian, "M"r C. R. Hill; auditor, Mr li. J. Darwin. Members stood in silence out of respect for comrades who had died at tho front.
