DEALING IN WAR MATERIAL.
A REMARKABLE CASE

Some remarkabio features were disclosed at the hearing of charges against George Hoyl and Jacob Stonor for dealing in war material without a permit.. Sir A. H. Bodkin, prosecuting, said that enonncus correspondence had been eeizod by the police, showing that He.yl and Stonor, with the co-operation of inon in Itio do Janeiro and New York, sought to dispose of huge quantities of Mausers, Hotchkiss, and Krupp guns, explosives and even Brazilian Dreadnoughts to various Governments. Tho -war material referred to was mostly in South America. One deal concorned half a million rifles. Another showed that the purchase nrico was £9,713,000, and • the sale price £10.5315,000. Heyl explained to tho cablo censor that the firm had a prewar contract with Russia. Stonor's name in pre-war times was Stein. The prosecution in the Hoyl-Stonor case called evidence to show that with a view to evading the censor, their agents had addressed them under women's names and referred to lovo matters. They mentioned bananas, meaning the armament of a particular sbi*>, and used tho word cheeses for rifles. Detective-Scrgcant Ashley, in reply to counsel for the defence, said that Stonor's loyalty outside this particular case, was beyond suspicion. On son had bben killed at tho front, and another, previously wounded, had been highly decorated. Stonor had been of prnnt. financial assistance to tho Government. The case was adjourned.
