FORTNIGHTLY MEETING, r

I The City Council met last .evening. Present—xhe Mayor (Mr M. Holland;, and Crs. E. Peek, H. J*\ Herbert, A. Wells, E. J. Jaoward, F. Buigoyue, W. Nicholls, J. \V. lieanland, P. R. Climie, A. McKellar, J. A. Mesher, A. Williams, A. M.. Loasby, H. G. Ell, M.P., and A. S.*Taylor. The Abattoir and Reserves Committee reported that it had made an inspection of the river bank between Hereford and Gloucester streets bridges, and had decided to cany out the following works for the improvement of the bank: —Between Gloucester and Armagh streets—Cut down three old willow trees in order to give a better view of the Provincial Council Buildings. There would, the committee considered, be a sufficient number of willows still there. Between Worcester and Hereford streets—Cut down a tree near the old mill island in order to give a view of the island, upon which a number of handsome tree ferns are now -flourishing. A rubble kerb to be built along the front of the lawn on Oxford terrace, with two or three openings. Flower beds to be arranged at the back of the wall. Trees and shrubs growing along the edge of the footpath to be taken out. South-west end of Gloucester street bridge—The shrubs and grasp to bo taken out, and rockery with ferns to be constructod.

The Works Committee reported that it had had its attention drawn to the method adopted by the Devonport Borough Council in dealing with household refuse, which produced an article of manorial value, and the City Surveyor had been authorised to proceed to Devonport to inspect the works and report as to whether the system was suitaßlo for adoption in Chrisfccburoh. The tender of Job Osborne and Co., was accepted for boring wells in St. Albans.

Tbe nffors of Mason, Strutters, and Co.. and the Crown Ironworks ' Co.. nach ?°POft at £73 2s 6d. were acceptcd for 4000 ft of 3-inch sorvice pipe.
