PICTURE SHOW POSTERS
A RESOLUTION' OF PROTEST
The character of some of tin' posters displayed in front of moving picture theatres was the subject of discussion at Thursday's sitting of tho Church of England Men's Society. Reference was made also to the suggostiveness of an advertisement m Christchurch newspapers referring to a picture to be shown .at one ol tin* theatres.
Mr House, who introduced the • übject, said that a resolution proterliiiir against the, character of these y>nsvr> had been carried at a conference at Masterton. He remarked oil the anomaly of the films being censored whilst the posters were not. He moved in the direction of conference entering a protest against the displaying ' of uncensored posters. Mr Smith (Ashburton) seconded tho motion, and suggested that a similar motion should be forwarded to the Government bv all branches.
Bishop Julius questioned whether written protests would be effective in view of the fact that at present Ministers are very busy men. He thought it likely that a written protest would be thrown into the waste paper basket, and suggested that arrangements should be made for a deputation on the subject to wait on Ministers in Wellington. After further discussion Mr House s motion was agreed to in the following terms: —''That this Dominion conference of the C.E.M.S. protests against the publication of unseemly and suggestive posters and advertisements in connexion with thn picture shows, and that the Wellington Diocesan Council be asked to arrange a deputation to wait upon the Minister of Internal Affairs with a view to bringing them under proper censorship."
