The Admiralty announces that 220.700 tons of British and 81,393 tons j of Allied and neutral merchant ship- | ping were lost in April owing to enemy action and marine'risks, compared with ; 555,056 tons and 338,821. tons, respectively. for April last year. The Ministry of Shipping; announces that, excluding coastwise and cross Channel traffic, the tonnage of steamers over 500 tons, entering and clearing . United : Kincdoni ports during Aprii was! 70,040,300. THE ITALIAN RAID. ROME, May 22. j All official message says:— . •'A participator in the raid on Pol a harbour, when mi Austrian Dreadnought was torpedoed, relates that the operation was carried out in the early hours of the morning. The weather was windy. A torpedo boat containing Lieutenant-Commander Pellegrini and a gallant crew fired two torpedoes FB. minutes after leaving the supporting convoy, which was composed of armed motor launches. When the enemy realised the presence of the torpedo j a terrific burst of artillery fire out. during which Pellegrini signalled: I have torpedoed ,1 ship, and my ship is destroyed. All help useless. A sqiiadron of chasinrc seaplanes broke' down an attempted enemy aerial at-! tack against our convov. | The account states that a hostile vessel was indisputably struck and, sunk or so damaged that it will be out of action for a considerable time. All the members of the torpedoing 1 party were taken prisoner. I
