CITY BY-ELECTION.
♦ THREE CANDIDATES NOMINATED. Nominations for the vacancy on the Citv Council occasioned by the conviction of Cr. H. Hunter on a charge of seditious utterance, closed at noon yesterday, when there were nominated:— Charles Allison. Henry Frederick Herbert-. Hiram Hunter. It is understood that there is a likelihood of tho contest being a straight-out one between Mctsrs Allison and Hunter. The poll will he taken next Thursday, May 30th. Mr C Allison stated to a representative of "The Press" last night that ho had not definitely decided whether or not to go to the poll. If an election -were hcTd it would cost the city £150 to £200, and the councillor would hare onlv a comparatively short term of office. Apart from this consideration, h<? had decided to await developments before announcing his decision in the matter.
