1 MAGISTRATE'S COURT. At tho Lyttclt-oii Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, Wore Mr'F. Knights and Caplain E. Captain Marcicl, Marine Superintendent, for Lyttelton, stated that he had sent Wilcox to tho ship on April 29th for % purpose of inspecting "the deck cargo, when lie noticed that tho. disc was submerged. Captain AW Wilcox, A«ietant Superintendent of Mercantile llariuo for Lyttelton, stated that before inspecting deck cargo on v«sela lie mado it a practice to see that they were not overloaded. Witness reported the matter to the ship's master, and remained iiy the ship while sufficient cargo was removed to raise the load line. Robert Sproulc, captain of tho Jiana., admitted that tho vessel had been overloaded, but submitted that the disc had become submerged while ho liad been temporarily absent. The overloading, however, had not l>een duo to a greater amount of cargo than usual having been taken on board but to the fact that the bilges were full of sea water, having been blocked by cement dropping into them when the veefiel was overhauled in January last. There was about eight tons of water in the bilges. Captain Marcicl reminded defendant that i*. was his duty to see that th/> ship was r.ot overloaded, and if the due bad been submersed when less than 'tho usua!_ amount of cargo had been loaded he should have immediately endeavoured to ascertain the cauao. Tho opening of the Lyttelton Citizens' Coast Defence Corps' shooting season took place on Tuesday evening at tho Lytts-lton Club Hall, when the first of a series of miniature riflo shooting competitions among the combined members of the C.D.C. and tho Lyttelton Club was commenced. The competition, for which the handicaps aro sealed, was continued last evening, and will continue each Tuesday and Wednesday for the next three weeks. At the conclusion of the tournament handicaps will bo announced and the results made known. Trophies will bo prceentod tho winner and the runner-up, and a special prise will bo given to tho competitor gaining the highest aggregate score.
