COLONEL'S SACRIFICE.
FACED CERTAIN DEATH
LONDON, May 8. The "Gazette" notifies the award of r.ix Victoria Crosses, of which the following is typical. The late Lieut .-Colonel M. C. Watson, D.5.0., of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, for most consnicuous gallantry, self-sacrificing devotion to dutv, and exceptionally gallant I leading during a critical period. When the nomey was continually attacking. tryin? to nir.rce into our line. Colonel Watson led his remaining Bmall reserve to the attack, under constant rifle and machine-gun fire. He organi ised bombing parties, and l*d the attacks under intense fire. Being outj numbered finally he ordered the retir©j ment, remaining himself to cover the 1 retirement, facing almost certain death. Tho assault Colonel Watson led saved tlir> line, hut he was killed covering the withdrawal.
