THE WAR LOAN.
TO THE EDITOR OF "THB PRESS "
Sir,—-I have just read your article of to-day, about subscriptions to the War Loan. It seems to me that we want to be told by the Government at once, not tho extremo amount that can be demanded, but the amount that will be a fair and proper sum to subscribe." I, myself, was advisod that if I subscribed four times the amount of my combined land and income-tax, that vould be sufficient, so I did so. But this absorbed all my income and more, so I had to borrow at 6 per cent, to invest in Government securities at 4J. It was possible for me to do this, but some people might find that they were unable to do this, that they could not borrow. Will you tell us whether four times tho amount of our combined land and income-tax is sufficient? j am sure many people will have to borrow, but wo must know how much, and also know in time to do so. —Yours, etc., J. H. M. Monday, May 20th. [It is for tho Tax Commissioner 10 sr.y whether the amount subscribed is sufficient. It has been explained, however, ibat where si taxpayer has subscribed to the loan the Tax Commissioner will write to him if he thinks tho amount insufficient, and tho taxpayer will theu have an opportunity of making a further subscript'in at the full rate Of interest.—Ed. "The Press."]
