STYX RAILWAY CROSSING.
THE WARNING BELLS
.Finality luis not. yet been arrived nt between iuho City Council unci "the itailway Department regarding the warning bolls at the Styx railway crossing. The By-laws and Finance Committee reported* to the Council last evening that it had asked the General Manager of Railways to instal loudcr-ttmcd bells nt the crossing, and to erect Urnm 25 vards from the crossing. If this were don© it would overcomo tho objection that if the existing bolls were removed they could not be heard by tho railway staff. The request had, however, been declined. Cr. Loasby considered the Council should continue to protest and protest until something was done. The Mayor thought the Council row might let the matter drop. If an accident happened the Council would be free from responsibility; it had done all it could. Cr. Flesher questioned very much whether the matter had come before the Minister of Railways at all. The Mayor suggested that the committee. when dealing with the letter from the General Manager of Railways, should bring down a fresh report. The committee's report was adopted upon the understanding that it would report further on the General Manager's letter.
