SALE OF HIDES. , The first auction sale since the requisition of hides by the Imperial Government terminated was held in Uunedia on Thursday. Contrary to expectations, both tannera and shippers appeared quite indifferont whether they got hides or not, and in consequence the bulk of the better class iiides wero passed in, selling brokers not being prepared to accept the vejry sharp decline on late ruling value 9. Hides a,re wanted both, for local uso and for shipment (say 3 the "Otago Daily Times") and it is expected that before long satisfactory competition will be forthcoming at auction sales throughout the Dominion.

' TATTERSALL'S HORSE SALE.

Messrs H. Matson and Co. had an entry of 30 horns on Saturday. With one or two exceptions no really good draughts were entered, and several buyers for this class had to leave with their requirements unsatisfied. Among the transactions were:—Account J. Christopher, Charing Cross: Six-year-old gelding £20, eged mare ±'8; J. Nelson, Addington: four-year-old gelding by Wild wood Jun., £12 10s; J. Woods, Spotswood: six-year-old gelding, £11; Brooksdalo Estate, Hawarden: aged mare, £18; account client: five-year-old marc £10; A. McCarten, Southbridge: nine-year-old mare, £20 10s; client : cight-yec,r-old gelding, £14; client: five-year-old filly, £8 10s; Conistan Estate, Hornby: five-year-old gelding, £27; J. H. Smith: turnout £13 10s. Aged hacks and harness horses sold at late rates. ' ASHBURTON. Wheat.—There no change to report. The quantity on offer is gradually diminishing, and the grain in process of delivery moatly comprises 6ales mado some time ago, of which, deliveries arc going on Blowly on account of the ehortage of railway trucks. For good milling there is sufficient demand to absorb the quantity coming on tho market, but second class wheat is only saleable at the under-grade price. Oats.—The market is very quiet, there being few sellers, while buyers are not operating to any extent. Algerians have receded in value considerably since the highest point, and seed samples cannot be quoted at over 4s 3d oil trucks, 4s, while light and inferior quality range down to 3s 9d. Oartons aro nominally unchanged, but lor coastal trade the. value to the merchant is 4s on trucks for B. grade; 4s Id to 4s 2d for A. grade. Special lines would, command moro according to buyers' requirements. Duns may bo quoted at from 4s to 4s 3d for ordinary feed, and up to 4s 6d for well coloured heavy lines, while for extra choice 3d to 4d per bushel more may be obtained. Chaff.—The enquiry is quiet owing to heavy stocks being held in different centres, for which shipment cannot ho mode on account of tho ehortego of eteamere. Prime quality may be quoted at from £5 to £5 ss, on truoks, second class from 10s to 15s lower, and very poor quality is neglected. THE PROPERTY MARKET. At the Ashburton land sale on Saturday the National Mortgage and Agency Co. of N.Z., Ltd., offered, on account of the administrators in the estate of the> late..Mrs George Tilson two properties situated at Hinds. They were offered together, and Mr George Berry, junr., Hinds, was tho purchaser at £7 10s per acre goodwill. SATURDAY'S POULTRY MARKET. Messrs J. B. Merrett and Co. had a pood entry of poultry on Saturday, some excellent primed birds being penned.
