THE COMPETITIONS.
SECOND DEMONSTRATION CONCERT,
There was hardly a vacant seat in the King's Theatre last evening, when tho second big demonstration concert of the Literary and Musical Competitions' Society was held. As before, the programme, a lengthy and extremely varied one, was provided by prizewinners in the recent competitions, and proved very entertaining and popular. At an interval in the proceedings Mr R. C. Bishop, patron of tho Society, presented the championship medals as follows: —Lady, vocalist, Miss Corrie Aslin; ladies' elocution, .Miss Fanny Kutner; junior ladies' elocution, Miss Kathleen Thomas; male vocalists, Mr W. H. Truscott; men's elocution, Mr H. McD. .Vincent; junior men's ©locution, Master Gordon Jiranthwaite. On behalf of the competitors, Mr Bishop also made presentations to Mrs Smith and Mrs Hall for their untiring efforts to make the competitions a success, Mrs Smith receiving a silver chain bag and Mrs Hall a lace table centre. Mr H. Sweeney, the stage
manager, was the recipient of a "Kewpie" attached to the end of a walking-stick, and Inscribed "From some of the Knute of the 1918 Competitions." Mr William Asprey (Sydney) and Mr J. A. Rosewarno (Gisborne), music
and elocution judges respectively, wero presented with silver badges of membership of the Society, and heartily thanked for their scrvicce, and for the benefit their presence and knowledge had been to music and elocution in Canterbury. Air Rosewarne, said Mr Bishop, amidst applause, intended to tnko up his residence in Christchurch. The evening's programme was as follows: — Piano duet, "Norwegian Dances," Irene Seymour and Ivy Evans; Highland fling, Elsie Collister; sailors' hornpipe, Eileen Thomas; recitation'in character, "Red Riding Hood," Stella Chapman; violin solo, "Un Sourire," Colin Taylor; humorous recitation, "Schoolgirls'. Ramblings," Mavis Ritchie; recitation, "Parts of my Body," Muriel Freeman; recitation "The Bells," Elsie Brewxne; Bristol Scholarship, Jean Wagner; recitation, "Craven," Gordon Branthwaite; "scholarship solo, I "Nymphs and Fawns," Ceciley Audibort; recitation, "Bobalink," Elsie Adams; Scotch song. "Af'ton Water," H. Phipps; recitation, "Carpe Diem," Minnie Dalton; operatic 6010, "Roberto tu che Adoro," Come Aslin; Dickens sketch, "Jo," Ada piano solo, "Etude," Ada Collins; irumorous recitation, "The Play," Gwcn Merrett; monologue, •'Melodrama," Howard ' Moody; vocal duet, "Autumn Sorfg," Mrs R. and Miss Audibert; character recitation, "Minuet," Lily Stevens; Shakespearean- recitation "Volumnia's Appeal," Mrs F. Maddren; English 6ong, "The Crimson Petal,'! Olga Wacked j humorous recitation, "The Country J.P.," W. H. Jones; English eong, "My Pretty Jane," H. Phipps; humorous recitation, "My Dilemma," Fanny Kutner; pianoforte solo, "Nocturne" (Chopin), Kitty Murphy; baritone solo, "Lorraine, L<ftraine, Lorree," Roland Smith; story without words, "Lady Barbers," L. C. Adame and W. Fredericks." '
There will be a matinee concert "this afternoon, and the final demonstration concert will be held to-night.
