Dr. Alexander Molesworth Tolhurst, M.11.C.5., L.R.C.P. (London), who was killed in action on the "Western front on the Bth ingt.), was a son of Mr G. E. Tolhurst, one of Wellington's best known and most respected citizens, and who was for many years chief inspector for Now Zealand of the Union Bank of Australia. Dr. Tolhurst was born in "Wellington in July, 1881, and was educated at "Wellington College. He studied medicine at Guy's Hospital, London, and took his degree in 1900. Almost immediately after qualifying ho received the appointmont of resident medical officer to a largo agricultural

settlement at Komombo, near Assuan, Egypt. At tho end of a year's servico thcro ho proceeded to England, where he took iurther. medical degrees, and returned to Wellington in 1910, _ and practised his profession. Ho enlisted in May, 1915, for foreign service, and was diverted for duty to the hospital ship Maheno on her first commission, returning with tho ship, and subsequently leaving again with tho Maheno on her second charter as a member of tho medical stall. He transferred from tho hospital ship to tho Expeditionary For cos in England, later going over to Franco. Dr. Tolhurst, as stated, practised his profession for some years in "Wellington, whero ho was very highly esteemed for his kindly Mature and professional skill. Dt. Tolhurst leaves a widow and two young children, who aro at present in England. His brother, Lieutenant It. M. Tolhurst, barrister and solicitor, en- ! listod as a private in 1015. and ianow an officer of tho No. 1 N.Z. Divisional Employment Company, on active servico in France. Mr Thomas Young, barrister, of Wellington, is a brother-in-law. Tho lion. 0. M. Thomson, M.L.C., of Dunedin. received cable advice on Thursday of the death of his fourth «on, Corporal John 11. Thomson, who is stated to have died from sickness in France on April sth. Dunedin, and was actively identified with the Knox Church Bible Class. ,lie left New Zealand with the Main Body, and took part in the historic landing at Gallipoli. and remained there until tho peninsula was* evacuated by the British. Later he went to France. His father received a letter from liim on Wednesday, in which he stated that ho was bcinff removed to another base to attend suspects. It is surmised that ho contracted some disease whilst performing this duty. He was a young man of sterling character and great promise.

Lance-Corporal C. T. Cieeve enlisted at Methven, and left with tho 24th Reinforcemonts in April, 1917, ana was in action up till March 28th, when ho was seriously woundod.

Details of the death of Captain Hill, of Dunedin, are-supplied in a letter written from France on March 4th by Chaplain Herron, attached to the Otago Battalion, and rccoived by the last mail. He writes: "I regret very much the occasion of this letter. Long before it reaches you you will have been informed of the death of your husband and the father of your children. Along with the transport officer. Lieutenant McLean, lie was shot dead by the mess cart driver, who had evidently become montally deranged, shortly after 9 o'clock yesterday morning. Ho was in to breakfast with the rest of Headquarters just about a quarter of an hour before. The tragedy has cast a gloom over the whole battalion. As you may readily judge from the way in which he received promotion from one rank to another aruring the time he lias been here, Captain Hill was one of the ablest officers in the battalion. Moro than that, lie was one of tho most popular. But hi.« work in this world is done and he hat gone to his new work, whatever thai, may be- in the other side of the thic film which we call death. With Lieutenant McLean, he was to-day given burial witli full military honours, with battalion present and band and firing party. Their bodies are laid to rest m the ouiet churchyard of one of the Roman Catholic churches of this country." \
