OBITUARY

DUKE OF NORTHUMBERLAND

(By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Australian and X.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, May 15. The death is announced of the Duke of Northumberland, at the age of seventy-two years.

Henry George Percy, .seventh Duke of Northumberland, a Privy Councillor r.nd Knight of the Garter, was born in 1846. He held many high social positions, including that of Chancellor of Durham University and Lord-Lieuten-ant of Northumberland, lie sat in the House of Commons for 17 years, when he was summoned to the House of Peers in his father's lifetime as Baron, Lovaine. He succeeded to the Dukedom in 1899. His eldest son. Earl Percy, who died in Paris in 1909, was one of the most promising of • the hunger Conservatives. He had been Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, r.nd great hopes were entertained for Jus future, when ho succumbed after a brief illness during a visit to Paris. The new Duke, who lias seen mu-!i military sei;vice, was born in 1880. He married seven years ago a daughter of the Duke of Richmond, and has two sons..

MR GEORGE BUTTERS.

Mr George Butters, whose death is announced, was born nt Papanui, and was engaged in farming at East Eyreton until ahout 15 years ago, when failing health obliged him to retire, since when ho had resided in Rangiora, / nnd latterly at Ashley. With the exception of serving on the East Eyreton School Committee for, a. number of years, Mr Butters did not take part in public affairs. He leaves a -widow and three sons, one of whom, Mr W Butters, went to the front with the Main Body, and was wounded on Gallipoli.

A Press Association message' from Greymouth announces the death of Mr I Jacob Theodore Skoglund. an old identity, and ex-Maj'or of tho town. _The death occurred at To Karaka on Monday of Mr Edmund Seamons, who had been aS resident in Poverty Bay for over 50 years. He was head shepherd' under the late IVIr Jas. Orr for 25 years, and settled on a small farm of his own at Te about twelve years ago. ,
