An apology for absenoe was received from-Mr J. F. Buchanan. Messrs J. Brady, xt. Radford, and. A. Price wrote agreeing to quarry metal at Geb- [ bie's Valley. ' Mr F. W. 'Wright, hotelkeeper. Little Bivor, applied for a reduction in the license fee on Account of the loss of business due to- tho reduction of hours, etc. It woe decided "to bold the matter over for filrther enquiries until tho next meeting:. Mr J. F. Buchanan wrote stating 1 that tho approßchea to tho Kinloch'Bridge were'in bad order. The • clerk waa instructed to request tho foreman to attend to tho matter. The Akaroa County Council wrote regarding the conference, of "delegates, to bo' bold at Dauvaucholle, to consider tho question of employees.' wages. The chairman and" Mr J. F. Buchanan were delegates to tho conference. ...

' Mr A. E. Williams requested permission to run a telephone wire across Kay's road.— Granted.

The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board forwarded an estimate of the proposed cation of contributions .from contributory local authorities for the yeai ending March. 31st, 1919. The sum required' from the Wairewa County was set down at £1811 18s '.6d, an increase of £521 on last year's levy. Mr Gray Skipper interviewed the Council regarding a blocked culvert on the Pa road, and also stated that the road needed'metal-

ling in. several places. It was agreed to. send the foreman round to fix up the culvert, Mr. Skipper • agreeing to find two natives to aseist him. It' was decided to see Messrs Karetai Bros, regarding metal /Regarding motor traffic, Mr M. Cooney moved:—"That the limit of speed on the straight- should to 30 miles per hour, and 12' miles per hour round curves." Ho considered that' there was no seed to be afraid of anyone going too fast on account of the present condition of the roads. Motors had improved very much of late vears, and were .now very effectively controlled. Motors-'at present were safer at 30 xnUon per hour'than older types had been p.t 15 miles. He thought eis miles round curves was alto-R-ethor too low. If the speed limit were fisted too low, it only encouraged people to break it. Few motorists observed the limit of six miles per hour round curves. Ho advocated placing the limit somewhere near the mark, eo that every one could keen the law. " . .

Tho chairman said that tho by-laws should be left alone until the combined conference of *local authorities dealt with tl/em. He

hoped that this conference would settle the matter so that a uniform speed limit would be' enforced throughout all the- counties. At present different counties had different speed limits, and these were very bewildering: to motorists. He had heard of a motorist w£o drove over a certain bridge' behind a spring l dray being finrd' for excessive speed. He sucsested that llr Cooney'e motion ehould l>o held over until nfter the conference.

Mr Cooney witU-'rew his motion. • Mr-G. Barclay Mated that the Port Levy road was in very bad order. It was decided to attend to it as soon as labour -was available.

Mr Feather's motion—"That this Council fake the necessary stops to bring gors© and broom under the Noxious Weeds Act in.tho Wairewa County," was held over till next meeting. '•!
