BOROUGH COUNCILS.

RICCARTON,

Tho Riccarton Borough Council met last evening. Present—The Mayor (Mr J. Brown}, and Crs. H. W. Wise, T. J. Stokes, A. D. Ford, C.J. Jlunnings, A. E. Steere, and \V. Dallev. A letter 'was received from, the Christchurch Domain Board, stating that tho levy on the Council for the ensuing year would be £72. , . The Korth Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board -wrote, stating that it proposed to allocato tho contribution of the borough .it £513 2s lOd, aa against £452 last year. After some discussion it resolved to fl.sk the Board to lay before the Government the question of raising capital money by loan. A letter was received from the City Council, asking if the Riccarton Council would consent to a wiuept being made to the Minister of Internal Affairs to alter the boundary ox the city on the Lincoln road, so that tho portion of the roed lying between tthe boundary of the borough and the city, which at present wa3 "no-man's land," would form part of the city. Cr. AVise moved that the necessary consent be given. Cr. Ford moved as an amendment that the matter be referred to the Bv-laws Committee for it to secure a legal opinion. The amendment was carried.

Aneodlc twelve inches long and about half an inch in diameter has been presented to Canterbury Museum by Mr W. Recce, of Christcijurch. It is made of polished greenstone, and was used by the ancient Maoris in the manufacture of flax mats. Another valuable ethnological addition is a greenstone mere, one item in a collection that belonged to the son of a Maori chief of the Upper Wanganui district. Mr A. I>. Dobson, of Chritstchurch, has given a collection of fossils front the Lower Waipawa Gorge; Mr T. Wilkinson, of St. Helens, Westport, has given interesting specimens of a piece of a rimu tree, showing fasciated growths; Mr E. G. Hogg has given a collection of rocks; and the Museum authorities have obtained specimens of coal from a new seam at Broken River.
