MONTHLY" MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon, Mr C. 11. Hewlett, president, in the chair.

A vote of sympathy with the family of the late Mr J. O'Halloran was passed in silence, members standing.

Correspondence with Sir Joseph "Ward in connexion with the Royal Commission on taxation was read, the Finance Minister replying that tho matter would bo brought up next session. A letter on the subject of .the departure of English mails being notified in tho Dunedin papers two days before closing as against only one day in Christchurch, was received, and it was decided to see the Postmaster on the matter.

It was also decided to write to the Postmaster-General asking if the safo arrival of mails in England could be notified through the newspapers. The Invercargill, Kaipara, Masterton. and P.almerston North Chambers of Commerce ".vrote endorsing the resolutions of the' Chamber on the subject of German colonies in the Pacific.

The Consular Agent for France drew attention to an advertisement with reference to diverting trade to France, hitherto done with Germany and Aus-tria-Hungary. Firms wishing to sell French in New Zealand were asked to write through the Consular Agent to the "Office National Commerce du Exterieur," in Paris, which would put them in touch with suitable French firms free of charge. The Director of the Technical College wrote asking for a continuance of the annual contribution from the Chamber. It was decided to continue the subscription.

The secretary of the New Zealand •Institute wrote on the subject of the need for improvement in the educational system of the Dominion. It was resolved to urge upon the National Government the necessity of ■ providing without delay for improvements and extensions in the educational system of the Dominion.

The Napier Technical College wrote on the subject of extension of technical education. It w as decided to reply that the Educational Institute and the Efficiency Board were taking the matter up, and that the local Technical College had always had the fullest support of the Chamber.
