FRUITGROWERS' ASSOCIATION.
A meeting of the Canterbury Fruitgrowers' Association was held on Saturday night, Mr H. "Wyait presiding. The chairman reported concerning' the National Apple Show at Auckland that fairly favourable comment had been made on the Canterbury exhibit. The Association had gained 24 first, 14 second, «nd 8 third awards.
Mr S. J. Fitch, one of the judges at the show, expressed the opinion that the fruit had been locally staged; a most disgraceful amount of pilfering had gone on there. Mr J. Irfmgton said that the Canterbury Show this year had surpassed previous efforts. Some of the Canterbury fruit bad arrived in a poor condition, pointing to faults in packing, but the Canterbury stand had excited some very favourable comment, an exhibition of "Delicious" beinjj especially admixed. The Show bad been Teally too early for Canterbury exhibitors, as some of the fruit had had to be packed be-fore it was ready, and it had been decided that it should be held later next year. Mr Fitch said that Auckland gained over Canterbury by having on exhibition a large variety. From the point of view of a fruit show," the Canterbury exhibitors had the advantage, but owing to the manner in which points were distributed Auckland scored the victory. The chairman then reported on the recent conference of Xew Zealand fruitgrowers held at the time of Apple Show in Auckland. It. was decided to postpone until the next meeting discussion on the report. Mr Longton stated that a Bill was to be submitted to Parliament fcr the establishment of Fruit Boards, with tli ; powers cf local boiio?.
