THE CALL FOR MEN.
AUSTRALIA AND THE WAR
"But for personal losses, and the sight of so many men in khaki, it must be difficult for Australians, with their abounding prosperity, to realise that their country, as well as every other portion of the Empire is at war," said Mr Harold Beauehamp, chairman of the Bank of New Zealand, to a representative of tho Wellington "Pest" on Thurs-. day.
'•'ln Sydney, the streets, from sunrise to sunset —and" after—are thronged with gay, well-dressed men and women; hotels, cafes, theatres, and other plac&s of amusement are most liberally patronised, and nearly every attendance at a popular race meeting or agricultural and pastoral show constitutes a fresh record. Ono sees hundreds of ablebodied young men in mufti, despito the daily appeals made by tho newspapers and recruiting agents for men of military age and physical fitness to jcin tho colours. It seems to bo a case of 'Nero fiddling whilst Rome was burning.' " "As a recruiting agent, Mr Cari michael, a legislator and returned soldier with the rank of captain, by the forcefulness of his appeals, has attained some measure of success recently," Mr Beau«iiamp added. "Mr Carmichael called, first cr all, for I'OCO men, and succeeded in getting 1400. These recruits were marched through the streets of Sydney, cn route to the Town Hall, where they were entertained by tho Lord Mayor and citizens prior to j embarkation. Tens of thousands lined the streets, and a considerable amount of enthusiasm was shown. Captain Carmichael, or 'Car,' as he is affectionately termed, lias become quite a popular hero. As an instance of his patriotism, it may be mentioned that he recently refused a portfolio in the Holman Ministry with a salary of per annum, in order to devote his time energy, and ability to stirrto" up his fellow-copntrvmen to a sen.se of their duty to. King and country.**'
