I'he Hon. To Heuheu Tukino, M.L.C.j is the Chief of the Ngatituwharetoa tribe in the Taupo district. He has for soriie tiino been a member of tho Board of Management for Tongariro National Park and speaks English fairly well. The new M.L.C. is the son of the great chief of the Taupo district, Te Heuheu, who, with a number of his tribe, was engulfed by an earthquake many years ago. The Hon. To Heuheu Tukinct some years &go announced himself as a supporter of the Liberal Party during the Premiership of the lata Ilti Hon. J. R. Seddon.

Mr A. F. Nicoll, n returned soldier, who has served about three years at the front, and lost his right leg . in France, has been appointed assistantinstructor in the art classes at the Wellingtmi Technical School. Mi* Nifcoll is a New Zealander by birth, and studied art in New Zealand, England, and Scotland, and is at present on the staff of the EtllnbUi-gh School of Art. He obtained leave to visit New Zealand, and left Etagland a few days before war was declared. On arrival in New Zealand he joined the Expeditionary Force.

Captain J. L. McAlister, who has been awarded the Military Cross, is a son of Mr J. H. McAlister, private secretary to Sir William Ftaser, Minister of Public Works. He waS educated at St. Mary's Cofiveht and Wellington College, and at the time of his enlistment was a member of the Education Department's staff. He went to SAmoa as a lieutenant, and, >-eturning, went to Egypt with a commission in the New Zealand Rifle Brigade. After seeing activij set-vice there in the operations against the Senussi, he went to Franco* and lias been engaged without receiving injury, in all the operations that have taken place since. On his 23rd birthday (May 6th, 1917) he was promoted captain, and now on liis 24th birthday the toveted distinction has been bestowed upon him.
