Progress of the War.

The news from the Western front this morning reoords a further British gain on tho sector east of Amiens. This operation, which appears to havo been a particularly meritorious piece of work, was carried out by the Australians, who advanced their line on a front of *1500 yards to a depth »of 1200 yards, estab-' lishing themselves on the lower slopes of tho ridge in tho neighbourhood of Vaux-sur-Somme, an important tactical point. The New Zealanders on their sector away to the northward have also been responsible for an effective minor operation. On the nigh f t of May 4th they advanced into the German trenches, and, after killing between thirty and forty of the enemy, took back ten prisoners. Apart from these activities, the messages to-day record little fighting on tho Western front, though it is apparent that the battle, particularly in Flanders, is being continued by the Allies' artillery. According to Reuter's correspondent, the British fire in Flanders during the tlireo days preceding Mar 6th completely prevented any enemy movement. Tho enemy, he adds, had undoubtedly prepared an attack for Saturday, but the British gunners smothered it before it could be launched. In Palestine General Allenby's operations continue successfully. According to an official report from this theatre to-day, the British have captured 1000 Turks and Germans during tho last few days, while the Arabs, under the King of the Hedjaz, oontinuo to harass the Turkish forces in tho vicinity of Maan. No news of outstanding importance is recorded from any of the other theatres of war, where the general situation apparently remains unchanged.
