RED CROSS WORK.

INCREASED EFFORT

It was stated authoritatively by a Wellington newspaper recently that there had been a considerable slacken-

ing in Red Cross and patriotic work in that centre, and that much less interest was taken in the providing or hospital needs and comforts than was tho case at the beginning of the war. Enquiries made by a "Press" representative at the Canterbury Ked Cross depot as to whether a similar slackening off had been noted in Christchurch brought forth an emphatic denial from tho heads of tho Society. On tho contrary, tliey state that while the work has been going on steadily during the entire period of the war, the biggest day the depot ever experienced occurred last week. That dav was the selected one in tlie month on which tho country branches send in +heij- orders for the month, and never in the history of the depot have the orders been so large. This naturally indicates that the branches have been spurred to even greater eflort than formerlv, and it is very encouraging, when it Is considered what enormous calls are being made on the Society nowadays. Quite recently, for instance, a communication was received from the Bombay Bed Cross Society appealing for large quantities of goods lor Mesopotamia. The blanket appeal was another one made recently. This was splendidly responded to, as was the Honey Day appeal. Honey, for this iatter, by the -way, is still coming in. The Prisoners of War appeal is to be the noxt, and tho Society is again putting its shoulder to the wheel for a further special effort. The depot workers state that whenever there is a big casualtv list there is an increased effort in Red Cross work, and ] thev consider the recent lists, coupled I with the big Mesopotamia requirements. are in the main responsible for the greater amount of Red Cross work being done.
