EDUCATION BOARD.
ORDINARY MEETING. The Canterbury Education Board met yesterday. Present—Messrs C. H. Opio (chairman), J. Grimmond, W. A. Banks, John Jamieson, C. S. Howard, E. H. Andrews, G. W. Armitage, J. Maze, W. M. Hamilton A. Pevcrill, and H. J. Bignell. ' Tho appointments recommended by the Appointments Committee were approved. The Building Committee reported that the architect had been instructed to prepare plans for a new building at Christchurch West for secondary classes and home science wc.rk, and that application would be made to the Department for a grant for this work and also the full cost of a class room to replaco tho temporary building. The Hornby committee's request for permission to erect a, soldiers' memorial in front, of the school had been referred to the chairman of the Board with power to act. Application to the Department ia to be made for a grant for a new room at Sumner. The report was Adopted.
Tho Agricultural Committeo reported:— That Mr W. J. Ccxtwright, Springburn school, had agreed to act temporarily as assistant instructor; that Mr Baird, first assistant, Woolston, had been appointed assistant instructor on tho West Coast at £300 per annum. The report was agreed to.
The Finance Committee's qpport stated that a statement had been submitted showing- particulars of tho deficit on r.ew buildings' account. The over expenditure since the date of tho amalgamation of tho Boards was £816, but it was decided to transfer to. the Rebuilding Account the loss of £644, the accountant to prepare a statement of the position of tho now buildings account once a year. Matters arising out of the recent election of school committees were dealt with. Cases where householders had failed to elect were held over till next meeting of the Board.
Tho Board tlion went into committee to deal with supplementary reports.
