A most esciting time was experienced by an overasaa vessel which recently arrived at a New Zealand port, while on the voyage from London. The journey as far as America was uneventful, but it was after leaving a port at the latter place that the trouble began- When they got ;is far as thev ran ashore on an unchartered sandbank ajH evidently loosened th« rudder, for about IaOO miles further on the rudder broke so tha captain had a jury rudder made, but Uie heavy weather that was: being experienced at the time mede it an impossibility to get it into position over the Gtorn. They then made for a South American port, wberci a now rudder was made for them. Twenty-four hours later it came loose, and broke adrift, so t-hey put back to get another rudder made. The liat one carried them within 1500 miles of New Zealand end than broke away, j>ad weather was then experienced and thoy had to heave to, in consequence of which their stores ran very low. A vessel eventually came to their assistance, and they were towed into port, having been over six months on a voyage from England to New Zealand.

A proposal that a number of vessels now lued as coal hulks in Australasian ports should be refitted for sea service, was laid bofare Hon. T. M. Wilford Minister of Murine, by Captain A. Whitney, of Auckland, last week. Chap tain Whitney stated that from rcceut investigations he estimated that 30.00(1 tons of shipping could be put afloat in this way and used either as cargo vtesels or a-3 patrols. They would require a good deal of refitting, aud us the necessary material was hot .'available in Australasaia, it would be necessary for the Imperial and Colonial Governments to commandcer them and make «11 the necessary arrangements. The Minister Raid that he would Tefer the matter to Cabinet, but it was certain that the vessels would not be allowed to put to sea unless Ihey satisfied every requirement as to seaworthiness.
